‘Too hot’ HP batteries recalled
p2p news / p2pnet: Hewlett-Packard is recalling thousands of faulty rechargeable lithium ion batteries laptop batteries after reports of overheating and burning, says the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
“This battery recall comes six months after HP and the safety commission announced one involving 135,000 battery units worldwide,” says Free Internet Press.
“In HP’s most recent case, batteries beginning with the bar code L3 are affected and may be found in HP and Compaq notebooks. HP Pavilion family notebooks with model numbers dv1xxx, ze2xxx, as well as HP Compaq family notebooks with model number nx48xx, may be affected. Compaq Presario models V2xxx and M2xxx may also be affected, according to the U.S. Consumer Product report.”
“An internal failure can cause the battery to overheat and melt, or char the plastic case, posing a burn and fire hazard,” according to the safety commission, quoted in the story. “HP has received 20 reports of batteries overheating … One minor injury has been reported (and) 11 cases of minor property damage.”
The batteries were made in China, whose president is currently on a marketing tour of the US, and the computers were sold in America at retail and online stores from January 2005 through December 2005 for between $1,000 and $3,000, the CPSC said, states Reuters.
Battery packs were also sold separately for between $100 and $300.
However, HP isn’t the only company with laptop battery problems, Free Internet Press points out. Dell and Apple have had similar problems.

One alternative to overheated laptop batterie is… to cool the laptop itself. And apparently, some people published some DIY recipes to do this. We reported on this here: http://cocolico.info/2006/01/24/laptop-second-youth-undervolting/
