Web ads, or not? – asks BBC
p2p news / p2pnet: Should the BBC have advertising on the international versions of its homepage and News website?
That’s what the Beeb is asking in a random survey of around 100,000 people.
"Readers within the UK are not being sampled as the proposal is that the sites will remain free of adverts to them when they log on," it says.
"A number of potential designs have been prepared to demonstrate ways in which banners and other branded boxes could be added to the top, bottom and side of headline and story pages on the BBC News website and BBC homepage."
The BBC is currently considering ways to capitalise on the popularity of its online material around the world. Of the 3.5m users who visit the BBC News website each day, approximately one-third are based outside the UK.
One person who already has an unequivocal opinion on BBC web sites is James MacManus, an executive director of Rupert Murdoch’s News International.
He says says the BBC has, "blatantly commercial ambitions" and is seeking to, "create a digital empire."

I don’t care for ads, but if they are flashy and annoying they’ll just be hit with the adblock.
