Nintendo’s Wii Revolution
p2p news / p2pnet: Why Wii? Well, it’s not Why as in double-i. It’s We as in double-e and Nintendo believes it’ll catch your eye and your ear.
Wii is the official monicker for Nintendo’s new game box, ex-Revolution, and “Together Wii will change everything,” says the company on it Wii-site.
The name, “clearly symbolises Nintendo’s intent to break the new console away from the traditional games market,” and Wii is, “more like a consumer-friendly home electronics name than a game console name,” says Games Industry.
But, the story points out, rather than a Cool New Identity, maybe it’s a wee mistake, or a Big One.
Nintendo has been touting Nintendo for Geriatrics in the shape of Brain Age, and perhaps that had something to do with the decision to go with Wii.
Wii? Sorry, Why? As the story points out, in “large swathes of the English-speaking world, including the UK,” having a wee means taking a leak, or a pee, and in Scotland and Ireland, ‘wee’ means very small.
But, “Among Web-posting gamers, Nintendo had been generating a flow of mostly positive hype heading into next month’s E3, where the first playable Wii games are expected to be released,” says MTV.
“While Nintendo’s previous console, the GameCube, had long suffered a drought of non-Nintendo-made games, the last few weeks have been filled with near-daily announcements of Wii support from third-party developers.”

It’s funny how marketing people insist that they do actually have brains, that they know their target audience, that they attract unfair criticisms etc etc etc.
To anyone else it’s obvious that marketing people are simply not from this planet.
