Bono edits The Independent
p2p news / p2pnet: U2 singer Bono is to take control of Britain’s The Independent.
It’s all part of Product RED, an “economic initiative designed to deliver a sustainable flow of private sector money to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria,” says the newspaper.
Of course, exactly how much money produced will actually end up doing something useful for those for whom it’s ostensibly intended is a very big question.
Bono, aka Paul David Hewson, is U2’s lead singer and main man and he’s been shooting his mouth off about poverty and a number of other issues for quite some time.
This means he has, “a unique insight into world affairs and will produce a ground-breaking newspaper,” writes Paul Vallely. But he’ll only be editor for a day, on May 16 to be exact.
It would have been fascinating to have been a fly on the wall in The Independent’s news room when this news broke.
Meanwhile, anyone who thinks Bono or, for that matter, American Express, GAP, Converse or Giorgio Armani, or other entities signing up for Product RED and similar projects, did so merely for the ink and bytes they’ll generate, is just a jaded cynic.

Nobody cares what he thinks. He’s just a self important hypocrite who likes the media spotlight. I wish he’d just fade off in to the background, make a couple more crappy albums and leave us all alone!
