Core crazy Intel
p2p news / p2pnet: What’s in a name? A lot, Intel hopes, having just announced a "branding" decision for its new second generation Core processors.
"Intel’s first generation desktop Core processor, Conroe, will carry the moniker Core 2 Duo, suplementing the 65nm Netburst Presler micro-architecture," says Daily Tech.
"Notebook processors, earlier dubbed Merom, will also carry the Core 2 Duo moniker even though the processors are very different than the desktop Core 2 Duo chips. The highest end desktop processors, previously named Extreme Edition, will be labeled as Core 2 Extreme opposed to the mainstream Core 2 Duo."
PC World has company spokesperson Bill Kircos saying, "You could kind of say we’re core crazy. It’s a way of saying ‘Hey, this isn’t your grandfather’s PC’."
Yes. Well.
But, blogs ZDNet, the real question is, What’ll they call the new Intel desktop Mac?
"All signs point to ‘Mac Pro’," it states.

I recently got a new Sony laptop with a Core Duo processor, and since it runs at the same 1.8 GHz clock speed as my other Dell with a Centrino, I decided to do some performance testing. From the results, it looks like the way programs are written will make a huge difference between whether or not we see a performance gain out of the new Duo line:
