Aussie bank on Pirate Bay
p2p news / p2pnet: Australia’s National Australia Bank and St George admits it advertised on Sweden’s notorious BitTorrent tracker The Pirate Bay.
Does that mean the country’s corporate financial community has recognized the value of p2p?
Apparently not.
“The banks initially denied they were advertising on the site but after being supplied with evidence to the contrary by ZDNet Australia, they launched immediate investigations,” says ZDNet Australia.
But then, “We are aware that a small number of adverts were placed with the site in question – contrary to our established site selection criteria,” the story has a spokesperson saying.
“St George has a strong policy of not advertising on any gambling, file sharing, adult or other ‘controversial’ sites.”
It seems a, “US-based organisation engaged by our media supplier did not manage the application of the site selection process appropriately and has apologised for their error”.

Ahem…, how exactly is file sharing controversial?
I would say it’s a well established and legitimate activity. I download linux software all the time from them…

The banking industry has such a bad rep in Oz that most of us would consider the banks to be the pirates of this story. I’m serious, for a few months maybe even a whole year, Oz’s big 4 banks were considered less trustworthy than used car salespeople. Now i think they’ve managed to claw their way back up above the used car dealers, but only just.
Oz is not the country to walk into a room full of strangers and proudly announce that you work for a major bank.
Assuming anyone believes you, you may find yourself on the receiving end of a deathly silence or a beating. But like i said, thats only if they believe you. So few people are employed by the banking industry in Oz these days, the most likely reaction you’d get is “Yeah right, bullshit. Noone works for them anymore. At least not unless you’re here on holidays from India.”
