Apple sues forum

p2p news / p2pnet: "I know next to nothing about Apple, so it really surprised me when I received an email from them this morning, threatening to sue me for a post on the forums," says SomethingAwful.

"The thread in question was posted to help people who purchased a MacBook Pro, which apparently overheats due to Apple engineers failing to apply thermal grease properly or something else completely asinine. It also linked to the Apple Service Manual, to help people get inside their computer. Apparently, this is grounds for Apple to sue me."

But that’s Apple. You owe it a living, not the other way around.

"NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING is even hosted on SA," the post continues.

"All we have is a link going to somebody else’s webspace. I guess Apple has no clue how the Internet even works; they should be threatening to sue the ISP hosting the horribly illegal service manual, not some guy who runs a forum where his forum members are TRYING TO HELP people fix issues with their faulty Apple computers. I replied to Apple and told them basically to screw off because I’m not doing anything illegal. All I got back was a standard form letter, so who knows if they even bothered reading it."

"Why does it seem like Apple’s legal team is constantly trying to alienate its loyal fanbase?" wonders SA. "Jeez, all the guy doing in that thread was trying to help people who bought faulty Apple products."

Actually, it’s not just the legal team. Apple is out to screw anyone and everyone for iTunes downloads. One dollar per and so full of C.R.A.P. that they’ll play only in iPods?

"Oh, and I can only assume Apple will now threaten to sue me for posting their stupid email too, so I guess I’m doubleplus screwed," adds the item.

(Thanks, Pipa)

    “faulty Apple products”

THIS is the reality that Apple wants desperately to gloss over. I’m not saying that all Apple products are faulty, so don’t go off half cocked. Apple has a history of reacting very poorly to this kind of situation, particularly to those who would have the temerity to point these flaws out in a PUBLIC forum. It seems like they prefer to engage in suppression of unflattering information and PR spin control rather than stepping up to the plate and dealing with the FEW problems that REALLY DO EXSIST in some of their products in a straightforward manner. Bad business practice IMHO. It makes me feel like if I bought an Apple product that had a manufacturing or design defect I’d get the run-around rather than a satsifactory fix.

I’m not surprised by Apple’s Reaction or by their Manufacturing problems. My company got a new Mac Mini and after a month of using it, it began shutting down mysteriously. After searching for answers with the vendor, we ran across a thread stating the cooling fan may need to be turned on as apparently, some Mac Minis shipped with them deactivated. We were all pretty disappointed that it would be something like that.

Decades ago my Apple 2 power supply failed. At that time you went to a long defunct store named Computerland for Apple, at least in my area. They were supposedly independent but very much in bed with apple and never missed a chance. To get my PS replaced I would have to pay for an “overhaul” which included “checking” this and that and “cleaning the keyboard” among other nonsense. Eventually I bitched enough that they agreed to sell me a used PS for an exhorbitant (but lesser) price but refused to guarantee the work. Of course it too failed within a few months and thats how I learned to find aftermarket parts. Well parts for the Apple2 were not widely available back then and I was pretty green and didnt know where to look. Eventually the A2 got ripped off and the insurance co. paid it off. Moral: Apple has been a right little bastard about parts, service, documentation and help since the very beginning. I know a lot of folks love the products and all but my first experience turned me away from them forever. I didnt like the IBM/Intel/MS alternative all that much but at least one could get parts. It always seemed to me that the phrase “the rest of us” meant those who were willing to be bullied and cheated. No offence meant to those who love the Apple stuff, just my personal opinion.

That is something really stupid to do. I mean, the CPU could fry, before you realise the fan needs to be turned on.
