Apple, Nike, sneaker-net

p2p news / p2pnet: Sneaker-net has taken on a whole new meaning.

Apple and Nike have come up with a shoe-cum-iTunes-cum-iPod nano marketing scheme aimed at Macolyte joggers and keep-fit fiends.

“Grab an iPod nano, a pair of Nike+ shoes, and the Nike+iPod Sport Kit,” says the promo site. “Rock ’n’ run,” says another. “Your shoes talk. Your iPod nano listens. Track your run in real time.”

The iNike cross promotion, “encourages runners to buy a new pair of Nike+ sneakers, which have a little pocket for a wireless sensor,” says Wired Blogs. “The wireless sensor is part of a $30 Nike+iPod Sport Kit from Apple, which is expected to ship within 60 days.”

How does it work? You place a special sensor under the insole in your shoe (the left one, says the promo site), attach the receiver to your iPod nano and hit the road, Jack.

Later, “connect nano to your computer and your work-out data synchronizes to both iTunes and nikeplus.com, where you can see your runs, set goals, and challenge friends.”

Presumably, one of your smelly old tennis sneakers would do just as well for the footwear part of the deal.

Meanwhile, right now Apple and Nike are collecting launch date from people they hope will buy iNikes by asking them to sign up in advance.

They must think that kids buy Nike products for health or athletic reasons. No, it for the “prestige” among peers. The old peer pressure advertisement gimmick to sell overpriced goods.
