Aussies like broadband for p2p
p2p news / p2pnet: Australian broadband news and discussion site Whirlpool.net.au has released its annual Broadband Survey, complete with interesting insights into the Australian market.
Whirlpool notes, “These results represent the views of informed opinion leaders, and informed consumers. We have not attempted to normalise the results to represent the broader marketplace, as we believe the information to be more valuable with this bias intact - the group surveyed are more likely to be advising friends, family and co-workers on which ISP to join. Broadband service providers should pay close attention to this demographic, as their combined influence can wield significant impact.”
So what are those on the cutting edge saying?
Most respondents were reluctant to sign up to any ISP for longer than six months, says the survey. Some 43.2% said they wouldn’t feel comfortable making long term commitments, which Whirlpool guesses is due to the fast paced market.
And 81.5% of the respondents agreed that ISPs need to reduce their reliance on the broadband network owned by Telstra, with 53.2% believing legitimate movie/TV download services are overdue (duh!).
Further questioning reveals almost half the survey people cite p2p as one of the main reasons for having broadband in the first place, with most of those people using p2p to download TV shows. Generally, having fast downloads was the standout with 89.8%.
The difference between those believing legal services are overdue (53.2%) and those who use p2p anyway (49.9%) suggests only a small number of people are prepared to wait for the media companies to get their act together and make content available online.

What passes for Broadband in Australia is laughable. Maybe the survey makes some feel more comfortable about the failure of their government to insist that telcos proide broadband services that are comparable to thos in developed nations.
As for p2p and consumers, its only because they’ve spent so much on the mad prosecution of new technologies and that they now need to justify having spent so much of their artist’s money that no-one down there has taken up p2p. Eventually someone’s going to get very embarrassed by their attitude to new technology. One thing for sure it will not be the lawyers who must ave creamed it
