Desmond Dekker, dead at 64
p2p news / p2pnet: Desmond Dekker, the man who showed reggae stars such as Bob Marley the way, has died at the age of 64 from a heart-attack.
Dekker’s 1969 hit Israelites is still widely popular.
Born Desmond Adolphus Dacres in Jamaica, “He was at his peak fitness, he had this big tour coming up for this summer and he was looking forward to it - and then that was it,” says his manager, Delroy Williams, quoted by PR-Inside.
He last performed at Leeds University, England, and was slated for the Respect Festival in Prague, Czech Republic next month.
Dekker’s popularity waned in the late 1970s and, “the king of ska was declared bankrupt in 1984,” the story adds.
Survived by his two children from a former marriage, he’s referenced in the Rancid song ‘Roots Radical’ in the lyric ‘The radio was playing/Desmond Dekker was singing/On the 43 bus as we climb up the hill,’ says Wikipedia, adding:
“He is also mentioned in the Common Rider song ‘Classics of Love’ in the lyric, ‘Midnight Marauder spinning on my stereo/Mr. Desmond Dekker has a crown made of gold/The kids are alright a what a what I hear’.”

Israelites - Dacres/Kong
I get up in the morning slaving for bread sir,
so that every mouth can be fed,
Poor me, Israelites.
Mi wife an’ ma kids they pack up an’a leave me,
“darling” she said “I was yours to recieve”,
Poor me, Israelites.
Cho! shirt dem a tear-up, trousers a go,
I don’ wan’ to end up like Bonny and Clyde,
Poor me, Israelites.
After a storm there mus’ be a calming,
you catch me in your palm, you sound your alarm,
Poor me, Israelites.
