Da Vinci Code virus strikes

p2p news / p2pnet: It hasn’t been confirmed. At least, not as far as Finland’s F-Secure is concerned.

Despite a write-up in India’s mid-day.com, you probably don’t have to worry about a Da Vinci Code virus —– not just yet, anyway.

“The Da Vinci Code is bad for you,” says the nid-day.com iten. “The virus, that is. A computer bug bearing the controversial film’s name has affected dozens of mobile phones and laptops in the city.

“The virus, which spreads via wireless Bluetooth technology, causes a message to pop up on Bluetooth devices: ‘Receive message via Bluetooth from Da Vinci Code?’ Once a curious mobile phone user accepts the message, the virus enters the system and destroys the phone’s data.

“A picture depicting an eye and a cross appears on the desktop and phone’s gallery.”

However, “We are posting information on this topic due to media attention and requests from our customers,” says F-Secure.

“There is a rumor that a new ‘Da Vinci virus’ has been hitting mobile phones. We don’t have a single infection report and we have no sample of such malware. However, we will keep you updated as soon as we have more information.

“All the discussion on the net on this topic seems to be linking back to one news article posted in an Indian magazine two days ago.”

NOTE: p2pnet is being sued by Sharman Networks and Nikki Hemming, ceo of p2p application Kazaa. “The suit is a little odd, since P2PNet.net is a champion of peer-to-peer file-sharing, which is the same business that Kazaa is in,” says The Globe & Mail. One Response to “Da Vinci Code virus strikes”

  1. Reader's Write Says:

What’s interesting to me is that I’m a dealer for a wireless phone company and the industry is so focused on getting all their new data and blue tooth services out they are ignoring the virus threat. all they see is dollar signs. I asked during a training once if there was any plans for protection against this threat and the response was basicly, they haven’t had to address that issue yet since very few virus’ are written for this technology. How’s that for buying your head in the sand.
