No anti-iPod plan, says MS
p2p news / p2pnet: It ain’t true! – says Microsoft. What ain’t?
That it, Toshiba, Victor Co of Japan, NTT DoCoMo and five other Japanese companies have organized an alliance to come up with rival to Apple’s iPod.
A "key Microsoft product manager" denied the story, originally published by Bloomberg News, says TG Daily, going on to quote the product manager, Adam Anderson, as saying, "The announcement made was simply the release of the Windows Media Player 11 technical beta in Japan and collaboration with eight hardware partners who use Windows Media technologies for their portable devices.
"Some press reports around this were inaccurate, as we did not make any mention of creating our own services or devices."
MP3 devices the companies produce, "could, in a technical sense, promote Windows DRM to the role of a competitive platform, at least from the consumer’s vantage point," says TG Daily.
"But these companies are not working together to accomplish this, and Microsoft is not pulling them together into some kind of coalition to go after Apple."

NOTE: p2pnet is being sued by Sharman Networks and Nikki Hemming, ceo of p2p application Kazaa. “The suit is a little odd, since P2PNet.net is a champion of peer-to-peer file-sharing, which is the same business that Kazaa is in,” says The Globe & Mail.
