Super-sized laptops

p2p news / p2pnet: It seems PC makers, tired of reductionism, are now going in the opposite direction.

They’re, "testing the waters for super-sized laptop computers that look more like briefcases than notebooks," says Reuters, going on:

"The trend is being driven as much by technology as demand, fueled by 19- and 20-inch liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors now starting to enter the market, upping the ante on the previous biggest models at 17 inches. But in a mobility-driven segment where smaller and lighter are generally considered better, the question of who might want to buy such big models remains to be seen."

Dell, along with Taiwan’s Acer and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics, have all announced plans for or begun selling mega-laptops with screens of 19- and 20-inches, says the story.

Pictured on the right is one such, Dell’s XPS M2010, coming in at $3,500.

"A striking feat of engineering that’s sure to garner attention in a stylish home or on a multimedia-intensive sales call, the Dell XPS M2010 is simply too expensive and impractical to be anything more than a curio for the rest of us," says CNET.

NOTE: p2pnet is being sued by Sharman Networks and Nikki Hemming, ceo of p2p application Kazaa. "The suit is a little odd, since P2PNet.net is a champion of peer-to-peer file-sharing, which is the same business that Kazaa is in," says The Globe & Mail. 1. Reader's Write Says:

The only way mega-sized laptops are going to work is when they figure how to fold the screen itself (actually, I think they almost do it already). Then, it will be viable and I will be interested.

Actually, there is a new screen that coming out in the future I saw a article about. Its paper thin. I’m really not sure how it works.

Ahh ,yes, its called OLED. (Organic Light Emitting Diode)
