Net Neutrality at Capitol Hill
p2p news / p2pnet: The Save the Internet campaign is today delivering 1,000,000 petitions and letters to Capitol Hill at a press event supporting the Internet Freedom Preservation Act (IFPA) from senators Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota).
The IFPA needs to pass in the Senate for enforceable Net Neutrality language to become law, says the coalition, going on:
"The million-letter milestone is remarkable but our work is far from over … Congress may still cave to corporate lobbyist pressure to re-write laws that hand over control of the Internet to the likes of ATT, Verizon and Comcast."
Save the Internet has three ways you can help it to mobilize support for Net Neutrality:
1. Contact the Senate: The nation’s largest telephone and cable companies are spending tens of millions of dollars to pressure Congress to allow them to seize control of the Internet. A critical vote will occur in the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on June 22. Please urge your readers and members to contact their Senators in support of enforceable and meaningful Net Neutrality legislation. They can visit SavetheInternet.com to sign the coalition petition http://action.freepress.net/campaign/savethenet or call Congress http://www.savetheinternet.com/callcongress.php.
2. Come to our Washington event: Today’s Hill event is scheduled for 1:45pm EST (sorry for the short notice). If you’re in Washington, please come to hear the Senators speak and show your support:
A video of the event will also be available at PoliticsTV.com.
3. Turn up the heat: Take advantage of the number of activism tools we have assembled at the Coalition Web site http://www.savetheinternet.com/=act. We have also created a campaign flier (PDF) http://www.savetheinternet.com/files/senate_flier.pdf and encourage you and your readers/members to download, print and distribute it wherever people gather."
