Netscape revival effort

p2p news / p2pnet: Once upon a time, under Mosaic, there was Netscape —– the browser.

Then it was bought by AOL.

These days, it’s little more than a footnote of browser history, but, "AOL is trying to revive its flagging Netscape brand by turning it into a Digg-clone or Slashdot 3.0, if you will," says SearchEngineWatch.

"How very Microsoft of you?" – posts elamb on Netscape technology. "Isn’t this the same thing Microsoft did to the Navigator. ‘fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony’," having said earlier, "Nice. All it needs now is more ADs."

Next up, "wow what a terrible terrible knock off of digg," says digg pwnes netscape, and, "shame," says Dugg.

"The new site combines elements of social bookmarking with traditional news generation, including ‘anchors’ who will choose and report stories," says CNET’s Blogma.

"The goal is to take on sites like Digg and Slashdot, where readers choose news items that interest them while providing more editorial control, according to Jason Calacanis, co-publisher who co-founded blog publisher Weblogs Inc., which AOL bought last year."
