New Aussie Net porn laws
p2p news / p2pnet: New Australian laws will soon be introduced to, “limit harmful material emerging on content services like 3G mobile telephony and subscription-based internet portals,” says Australian IT.
“The new capabilities of mobile devices to receive and display audiovisual services means that some of these platforms – and thus regulatory – distinctions are being broken down,” communications minister Helen Coonan is quoted as saying. “These developments raise the question of the way traditionally distinct content regulatory systems should apply to a single converged device.”
The immediate concern is, “the fast growing number of premium adult services being offered over 3G phones,” says the story.
Coonan says converged technologies will “similarly blur the regulatory lines between broadcast televisions and internet TV (IPTV)” and, “”I will soon introduce to the Parliament legislation to provide content safeguards comparable to those in place for traditional media platforms.”
The new laws would extend existing legislation covering TV and the Net and would, “include the prohibition of content rated X-18 or above, and will require companies to offer consumer advice and age restrictions on access to adult content,” says Australian IT.
But Coonan, “poured cold water on a push from Coalition backbenchers to force internet service providers to filter all content coming into Australia to reduce the problems of pornography”.

Yeah… I’m not Australian but I guess their government should have better things to worry about other than people looking at boobies…

All the more reason that ICANN should make xxx domain a reality. Sadly, that won’t happen with the present administration and its attitude of we know what is good for you better than you do.
So much of this political crap is nothing but pushing self interests.

Not sure I agree with you on that; if such a domain would be created it would create a “guetto” within the internet with the potential for censorship increased, and of couse there is the problem of deciding what is “offensive” or not and all the different laws in all countries (think about what could be on .xxx in the Netherlands vs countries like Australia).

Always when a new technology emerges that enables porn to be experienced in a new way, everyone goes “ooh aaah, horrible!” and tries to legislate it into oblivion.
Why not make it mandatory for kids to give a DNA plus a retinal sample each time they sit in front of the computer aswell? It’s for the good cause right? (I’m ironic here)
This is how it is, if parents don’t teach their kids about sexuality, the porn industry will, with obvious consequences. There’s no net nanny, no deal, and no fucking way that a law will prevent somebody whose curious about sex to learn about it in some way or other if their mind is set on it.
So, instead of passing idiotic legislation which only aims to annoy the shit out of people, they should focus on getting parents to be more involved with their kids, instead of putting them in front of the computer all alone!

What a disgrace, they should just get the publisher of this website to delete anything they decide they don’t like. John has proved expert at doing in anyone who doesn’t pay up or who disagrees with him, he is ideally qualified for work in the entertainment industry or government. It wouldn’t be such a big step John, the record companies already use your web site as the media bulletin board
