New MS, Yahoo, IM apps
p2p news / p2pnet: Microsoft’s instant messaging service, redesigned as a business tool, is being unveiled in 60 countries today, says The Globe & Mail.
"The first of the company’s new Windows Live series of applications, Live Messenger is leaving its original teen market behind," says the story.
"It now has such business-friendly features as free voice-over-Internet calls, improved voice and video capabilities, a unified contact list and the ability to share folders with contacts."
Or as IT Wire sums it up, "The launch today of Microsoft’s Windows Live Messenger service signals a no holds barred effort by the software company to carve a large slice for itself of the burgeoning internet telephony market. Aside from its instant messaging (IM) function, the new service offers voice and video calling features that go head-to-head with the eBay owned Skype service."

But Bill and the Boyz aren’t alone with a new IM service. Yahoo, too, launched an updated version of its messenger service, in beta, with plug-ins that allow users to share more information, says The Register, going on, "The update will enable users to run many software packages simultaneously, so groups can watch movies together, or share their calendars. Third party plug-ins will also allow Yahoo!-ers to track and share wish lists on Amazon, or keep tabs on an eBay auction."
