Winny useage increases
p2p news / p2pnet: Winny, Japan’s most famous p2p file sharing application, is now being used by around 500,000 file sharers.
The app first gained notoriety in 2003 when some of its users had the dubious distinction of becoming the first people in Japan to be victimised by the Big Four Organized Music cartel. Creator Isamu Kaneko was also arrested.
Since then, there’s been steadily growing number of security breaches associated with it and, "Information leaked since last month includes the itinerary of a visit to Osaka by the Crown Prince and Crown Princesses, Kyushu Electric Power Co. nuclear power plant documentation, and details on an employee of the Iwaki city government in Fukushima Prefecture," states The Yomiuri Shimbun.
"Experts say the only way to stop information leaks is to prevent the use of the software in the first place."
Could the experts be in any way associated with Sony BMG, Warner Music, EMI or Vivendi Universal, one wonders?
Tokyo-based Net Agent and, "other Internet security firms," have cautioned against using Winny, "as many people seem to be using it for recreational purposes," says the story.
Meanwhile, as of February, the number of computers running Winny on weekdays was about 300,000, and about 400,000 to 500,000 on weekends, "showing that even after the public learned of the problems caused by Winny-related data leakage, the number of users continued to increase," it adds.
