France Earth vs Google Earth
p2p news / p2pnet: France may have capitulated to Apple, but it claims it can out-Google Google, at least as far as Google Earth is concerned.
With Géocatalogue as the Géoportail search engine, and involving the National Geographic Institute and the Office of Geological and Mineral Research, its new satellite look-down service is slated for official launch in September, says the site.
We went for a look at 6:47 am Pacific, today, and although we eventually got into it (20 minutes later), it immediately froze and we couldn’t do a search. For the same reason, we weren’t able to get any more information.
However, "With the wonder of Google Earth, President Jacques Chirac reiterated the necessity for France to have such a site saying the state had to be at the forefront of modern technology," says All Headline News, quoting him as saying:
"It is also a case of economics. With Galileo (the European Union satellite navigation system), with the mobile telephone, services linked to global positioning will develop a lot. It is also about democracy because our citizens have the right to know all the facts about the environment."
A, "clear view of your favorite French beach or monument is only a click away," says Reuters. And that may well sum it up because it seems France’s answer to Google Earth only covers French territory.
We tried again at 7:09 am, but still no luck.
