p2p news / p2pnet: Shawn Fanning, the man who invented Napster, the p2p application which started it all, is still trying to make headway with his Snocap DRM, billed as a service which tracks sales and downloads online, and, “manages payments between retailers and rights holders”.
Fanning’s Napster was buried by the corporate music industry, only to eventually be disinterred by Roxio, re-named Napster. The corporate Napster has been singularly and indelibly marked by its failure to make any kind of impression on the online music loving community.
Now Snocap wants to, “expand its scope beyond the legal P2P world, which hasn’t taken off as quickly as many industry insiders had hoped,” says MP3.com in a massive understatement.
“As an artist or label, once you have uploaded your tracks to the SNOCAP registry you will have access to our network of retailers to sell your music,” says the sales site.
Snocap, “received increased attention a year ago when, in the wake of the landmark US Supreme Court decision in MGM v. Grokster, the major P2P services faced cease-and-desist letters from the music industry and contemplated a move to legitimacy,” MP3.com goes on. “Snocap vowed to help them do that.”
Err, Yes.
Meanwhile, “Mashboxx, the legal P2P service headed by former Grokster chief Wayne Rosso, picked Snocap to serve as the clearinghouse of sorts for its service, but has yet to launch,” adds the story.
“The company has made few public statements since announcing a licensing deal with label giant Sony BMG last June in the wake of the Supreme Court decision.”
Snocap allows, “P2P technology to be used in a copyright respecting manner,” says Fanning on the site.
