A Stream of Light
p2p news / p2pnet: Jupiter Research estimates download revenues will generate $806 million by 2009. Therefore, if politically conscious musicians, such as those who played Live8, gave just one dime each time one of their songs is downloaded, annually over $80 million could be raised for philanthropic causes by then, says singer/songwriter Elizabeth Pendleton.
Ten cents can provide two poor children with iodized salt for a year, preventing iodine deficiency, the leading cause of mental retardation and stunted physical growth, and preventing three poor children from going blind by providing them with enough vitamin A for one year,” she says. And in Zambia, it’s still enough to buy milk, onions, tomatoes, salt, sugar, bread, jelly, eggs and beans.
“Right now ten downloads could immunize a child from Polio for life and 100 downloads could buy enough high protein biscuits to feed three hungry children for a month,” Pendleton, who’s based in But Los Angeles, continues.
She recently challenged Bono to give one dime from each U2 download to Africa. Unsurprisingly, she didn’t heard back from him. So instead, she’s found her own way to bring music, technology and philanthropy together. She’s launched The Royalties Group on Myspace.
On behalf of her Celtic group Awakening Queen Maebh, she gives one dime every time her music is downloaded, and the money goes to NICIE, the Northern Ireland Council of Integrated Education which helps parents establish schools where Protestant and Catholic children are educated together, “in a school system that’s otherwise 94% segregated along sectarian lines”.
Music can, and should, be part of the solution, “especially to problems musicians pontificate about,” she says. “That’s why my new Myspace group is exclusively hosting artists who give a portion of their royalties to worthy causes.”
Her site will regularly feature music by, and interviews with, those artists, and their music will build what Pendleton is calling a Stream of Light, a playlist solely made up of music that’s helping people.
“It took the first month to get the technology side working, a crash course in Myspace code for the technologically-challenged of sorts, “ she says, adding:
“Now I need help getting the word out about the group. Please join. I want to find music fans who like the idea of their entertainment consumption serving a benevolent function.
“And I want to find artists who recognize the value in adding a humanitarian dimension to the download equation.”
Digg this.
