NBC,Tribe deal?

p2p news / p2pnet: Is NBC trying to do a Rupert Murdoch?

Tribe, “the social network preferred by Bay Area hippies and ravers,” has caught NBC’s eye, according to ValleyWag,com, which says NBC is in the process of acquiring Tribe Networks, Inc.

“I understand that the deal is far enough along that a letter of intent has been signed by NBC and delivered to Tribe, and that a team will be visiting the Tribe offices soon to go through the basic steps of due diligence,” says the story, adding:

“It seems NBC is truely trying to get into the social networking business. The recent purchase of iVillage, the deal with YouTube for distribution of shows, and now the potential purchase of Tribe.

“Is this simply NBC trying to keep pace with Fox, or do they have some greater plan in mind?”

Murdoch’s News Corp bought Intermix Media, last year, and with it, social site MySpace.com.

But this won’t be NBC’s first foray into so-called social networking.

In March, NBC Universal was said to be buying iVillage for $600 million, “to get in touch with its inner woman,” as the Los Angeles Times summed it up at the time.
