Paris says Wi-Fi by 2007
p2p news / p2pnet: Many people would argue Paris is already one of the most connected cities in the world, but it wants to consolidate its position with blanket Wi-Fi coverage in parks, squares, libraries, and public areas by the end of 2007.
Quoted in The Washington Post, mayor Bertrand Delanoe says Paris hopes to use private firms to set up 400 free Wi-Fi access points next year and allow Internet service providers to install antennae on strategically-located public property.
“We will act fast and firmly… to create the most favorable conditions for Paris,” the story has him stating.
“It is a decisive tool for international competition and thus important for the city.”
The plan also calls for slashing taxes on companies that lay down fiber optic cables to get 80% of all buildings within the city connected to so-called ‘ultra-high speed’ fiber optic networks by 2010, adds the story.

what free access, hmmm wouldn’t that be anonymous as well? (ip changes when you leave the park, of course it’s probably log the wireless card id.)
