Firefox 2.0 beta candidate

p2p news / p2pnet: An integrated spell checker and anti-phishing tool are two of the features in the first beta of Firefox 2.0, slated for release tomorrow.

It comes in Mac (Yes, Mac) and Linux flavours but beware, says PC Magazine, because it’ll, “overwrite your existing themes, and render existing extensions unusable”.

The beta includes a horizontal scrolling capability for tabs, and an ability to close a tab directly from within the tab itself, says the story, adding the Options dialog has been reworked to include a horizontal, tabbed based interface, “and numerous changes have been made under the hood”.

Meanwhile, “I didn’t have any intentions of putting together a portable version of this Release Candidate build for Firefox 2 Beta 1 but there have been several people asking and emailing me about it,” posts Ryan on Cybernet.

But, download the Portable Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 (Release Candidate), unzip the file and browse for the file PortableFirefox.exe then, “Just execute that file and you will be running Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 (Release Candidate)! The profile is kept with the PortableFirefox folder so you don’t have to worry about messing up your other profile and the uninstallation process is simple…just delete the folder!”

Cybernet also has a How To Tweak Firefox 2.0 Beta 1 post, including items such as, “removing the red ‘X’ from each tab or maybe only placing a red ‘X’ on the current tab” or, how to prevent the scrolling tab-bar, a feature that I am not too fond of. I have broken the page up into sections so if a section doesn’t interest you just skip to the next one.”

For now, “After upgrading to the latest nightly build of Firefox 2.0 I noticed two features that I haven’t seen before,” says Ryan. “One of the features was an ‘Undo Close Tab’ button when you right-click on the tab-bar or on a tab. This allows a user to recover a site that they may have just accidentally closed. This is great because ever since they put that little red ‘X’ on each tab I have accidentally closed sites several times.

“The other feature that I don’t like very much is a scrolling tab-bar. When you open too many tabs Firefox will put scroll buttons on each end of the tab-bar. On my 1280×800 laptop screen it only allows me to open 10 tabs before it displays the scroll buttons. Hopefully they will end up letting users choose the minimum size of the tabs before the scroll buttons appear, otherwise I am sure there will be an extension to cure this!”

Digg this.

  1. Reader's Write Says:

The TabMixPlus plugin alraedy does most of this, you can set minimum tab size and when there are too many tabs they can be made to start a new row or scroll.

I’m off to mozilla to see if there are any changes to the rendering engine or support for new technology etc…
