Chat room bomb plot
p2p news / p2pnet: Assem Hammoud, said to have talked in chat rooms about a plan to blow up New York commuter tunnels, kept a low profile, say officials at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, where he’d studied for seven years.
US officials revealed, eight al Qaeda-linked suspects, one of them reportedly a Canadian, were planning an attack on the tunnels that carry commuters under the Hudson River into Manhattan, continues CTV.
He and others were monitored by agents lurking in Net chat rooms used by Islamic extremists, says the Globe and Mail.
They’d allegedly used coded language to discuss a possible attack in train tunnels under the Hudson River between Manhattan and New Jersey, says the story.
According to Reuters, US military prosecutors accused Hammoud of “forming a gang with the aim of launching terrorist attacks”.
Lebanon’s Interior Ministry said the 31-year-old suspect, arrested in Beirut in April, had confessed he was planning to spend four months training in Pakistan before launching the attack late in 2006, says the story, adding:
“Hammoud’s family has denied he was involved in such a plot.
“Judicial sources said five other unidentified suspects were also charged, but declined to elaborate. If convicted, Hammoud could go to prison for life.”
School records show Hammoud studied finance part-time basis for seven years, “entering the university in 1995 and graduating in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in commerce,” says the CBC, adding, “University spokesperson Chris Mota says Hammoud didn’t do much to set himself apart from other students.
“All we know is that he was here, that he met all of his academic requirements, he graduated,” the story has Mota saying.
“And that’s all that we know about Mr. Hammoud.”
