Colombia says DRM is good

p2p news / p2pnet: Anyone who thinks file sharers are thieves and criminals, and that DRM C.R.A.P. is fair and reasonable, should perhaps think about moving to Colombia.

There, “President Alvaro Uribe has signed laws that increase both the maximum prison term, from five to eight years, and the minimum term from two to four years,” says PC Pro, adding:

“The laws also introduce criminal sanctions for the violation of technological protection measures. Cracking DRM systems or even copying restricted content is now a criminal offence.”

New penalties are also now on the books for, “anyone providing fraudulent information regarding the distribution of public performance or broadcasting fees to copyright owners,” says the story.

So what sort of skull duggery was done to pull the cocaine capital of the world into approving this? What, did the cartels watchdogs threaten them with removal from the World Trade Organization or sanctions if they didn’t buckle under?

Methinks there is more than meets the eye here and the whole story isn’t being told to public eyes.

  2. Reader's Write Says:

The cartels threatend to buy their coke from some other country if Columbia did not tow the line… ;-)

  3. Reader's Write Says:

The president of Columbia should read this.

The biggest record producer in Colombia (it is not Columbia). Sonolux, a RIAA member, has produced in the recent past about 24 records with songs that belog to my familily without any license and without paying a cent in royalties for the millions of records sold.. we estimate over 10 million copies.

We sued the Colombian record company in US Federal Court and won a final judgement that is worth about US$500,000 in present value in December 2005. Sonolux has not paid a single cent of the judgement but the record company is still selling the records in the USA, even though the court ordered them to stop selling records 41 months ago.

Sonolux is a RIAA member owned by Organización Ardila Lülle, that in turn is owned by the wealthiest Colomboan, Carlos Ardila Lülle, a personal friend of president Alvaro Uribe who financed the president’s political campaign for president with a reported 252 million pesos.

Get the connection between RIAA with “DRM is good in Colombia”?
It just that the crooks want honesty in others.

Oh, Puhl-leeze!! A Country that can’t even get the coca plant under control (even with billion$ in DEA money) is now going to be chasing after people ripping CDs or using AnyDVD? I’d have more to say, but my sides hurt too much from laughing so hard and I have to clean the Merlot off my monitor.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

The above write says that our Sonolux infringement case should be more publicied in Colombia.

While that is true, it is not possible whre the media is controlled by a few. Here in Puerto Rico or the USA, no newspaper or media has reported anything about our various lawsuits against Sonolux, Sony or Peermusic. All cases of obvious thievery and intentional copyright infringement. Were it not for my writing on the Internet no one would know how the big corporate cartels do the opposite of what they preach. For exampl, Sony preaches anti piracy, but we cought them making at least 24 unlicensed records with our songs. Anything to scam money.

I can only imagine that in Colombia it is no better. After all, the owner of Sonolux Carlos Ardila Lulle, a billionaire in US dollars, who is sole owner of a 68 company conglomerate that has about 30,000 employees. His conglomerate owns the biggest television-radio network (RCN) of Colombia. Too bad he likes to record our song “Desde que te marchaste”, included in about 17 of his records. Too bad for us he does not pay royalties.
