Google’s huge profits

p2pnet.net News:- People with shares in Google will be well pleased.

"Profits more than doubled in its second quarter as it continued to perform more strongly than its nearest rival Yahoo," says MSNBC, quoting Google ceo Eric Schmidt as saying, "The opportunities before us really are unlimited at present. It’s another good day and a good quarter at Google."

More than 99% of Google’s revenues come from advertising, "and the company said gross revenues increased 77 per cent on a year earlier and 9 per cent on the previous quarter as it became more proficient at placing ad contextually on its search results pages and other sites" and, "it look [sic] as though our model continues to work extremely well".

Yahoo, "reported sales and profits slightly below expectations on Tuesday and said it would be a quarter late in introducing new ad technology that could help it to catch up with Google," adds MSNBC.

Amnesty International has just named Google and Yahoo, as well as Microsoft (the ‘MS" in MSNBC), Sun Microsystems, Nortel Networks, and Cisco Systems, as companies which help governments censor the Net, or track down users.

It released a report detailing the roles of Yahoo!, Microsoft and Google, "in Net repression in China," alongside the launch of irrepressible.info, a campaign which aims to persuade the companies to act responsibly. .

“The apparatus of internet repression is considered to be more advanced in China than in any other country and companies are particularly willing to cooperate with the Chinese government,”said the human rights body.

The report, Undermining freedom of expression in China, The role of Yahoo!, Microsoft and Google, includes eight recommendations for action.
