Super-fast content delivery
p2pnet.net News:- CacheLogic and BitTorrent say they’ve teamed up to, “further enable the widespread adoption of P2P technology as a distribution network for commercial video and other rich digital content”.
It’s been evident painfully obvious since p2p (peer-to-peer) was first mooted that it would eventually become one of, if not the, primary online communication and distribution systems.
Clear to everyone but the entertainment and software cartels, that is, although Hollywood is using its MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) to both have its cake and eat it by, on the one hand, crushing torrent sites, and on the other, doing a deal with BitTorrent creator Bram Cohen.
Meanwhile, the CacheLogic / BT deal has resulted in the open-source Cache Discovery Protocol (CDP) which ISPs can utilize to, “mitigate the burden of BitTorrent traffic in an era marked by heightened awareness of network neutrality,” the two companies say.
“CDP will enable BitTorrent client software to automatically discover and take advantage of caching devices within an ISP’s network to significantly accelerate the delivery of legitimate content whilst reducing costs.”
Almost in the same breath, CacheLogic has also announced its VelociX platform which, it says, combines scalable p2p with a distributed physical network of p2p caches.
“On VelociX-equipped broadband networks, large media assets such as television programs or movies can be downloaded in minutes rather than hours," it says, going on:
“For content owners, the Peer-Assisted technology underpinning the VelociX service provides a seamless, end-to-end solution for the publication and high-speed delivery of digital media to mass audiences. This is accomplished at a significantly lower cost compared to legacy delivery solutions, which enables content owners to effectively monetize a much wider range of media. Using VelociX, it is finally possible to cost-effectively offer a wide range of digital downloads of movies, television programs and other rich content to customers over the Internet.
“For Internet Service Providers, the combination of a physically distributed P2P caching network with accelerated content delivery allows the VelociX platform to massively reduce the upstream congestion that has been previously associated with P2P. Additionally, the content acceleration capabilities of the VelociX platform enables Service Providers to fully utilize their high-speed connections to provide truly compelling services for their subscribers.”
Good, eh?
So does that mean that soon, all kinds of TV shows and movies will be, “downloaded in minutes rather than hours”?
Nope. As the puff piece says, the acceleration applies only to "legitimate content " defined in the email accompanying it as, “legal content” and not “infringing content”.
