More critical MS problems

p2pnet.net News:-With Apple’s Leopard breathing hard down its neck and Firefox snapping at its heels, Microsoft has already had to deal with more critical vulnerabilities this year than in 2004 and 2005 combined, says McAfee, quoted by PC Pro.

Yesterday’s monthly set of patches highlighted nine ‘critical’ and three ‘important’ browser, Windows and Office-related security holes that allow remote code execution.

Problems such as a vulnerability in PowerPoint have already been publicly reported and are being actively used in cyber attacks but, "the bundle of updates also covers bugs Microsoft discovered itself, the company said," states Silicon.com. "These issues have not been publicly disclosed and are not described in the bulletins."

A remotely exploitable vulnerability in Windows is already being used in attacks on PCs, says the story, adding:

"The problem lies in a Windows service that provides support for networking features such as file sharing and printer sharing, the company said in security bulletin MS06-040.

"Christopher Budd, security programme manager at Microsoft, said in an interview: ‘This is the one that we’re encouraging people to prioritise and put on the top of the stack for their testing and deployment.’ If immediate patching is not possible, Microsoft suggests using its workarounds, he said."

Last night (2 AM EST aprox.), my PC rebooted itself, and a message appeared saying that Windows XP had just recovered from a critical error. The problem files were in a temp directory under the Local Settings folder. I didn’t think much about it until I got to work, and found out all the computers there had rebooted or shut down completely too. Some of my co-workers had similar problems at home. Most of the PCs at work have XP PRo, but two have Win2K, and they were also affected. The Win2K systems are notable because they are not set up to receive updates automatically. Could this have anything to do with “Patch Tuesday”?

I might be crazy, but I seem to remember another time where my computer received an update from Microsoft that I didn’t ask for, and with the automatic update feature turned off…
