Fighting the RIAA, and winning
p2pnet.net News:- RIAA victim Debbie Foster has a powerful new team on her side.
The American Association of Law Libraries, ACLU, EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) and Public Citizen have weighed in, filing an amicus brief strongly urging a judge to award her the cost of her attorney’s fees in battling what the EFF calls “baseless allegations” against her.
The RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) claims Foster downloaded copyrighted material, but she fought back and the case was dismissed.
But, “The RIAA has forced many innocent Americans through an expensive and emotionally draining process to clear their names,” says EFF lawyer Jason Schultz. “Some, understandably, just give up. Deborah Foster fought a brave battle against unjust charges, and she deserves to have her attorney’s fees reimbursed.”
So far, the RIAA has sued close to 19,000 men, women and even young children for allegedly sharing music online.
“Innocent victims of meritless lawsuits have the right to fight back,” says Schultz. “The RIAA needs to know that it can’t continue its sloppy campaign without regard to the people ensnared by it.”
