Windows ‘Blaster’ worm alert
p2pnet.net News:- A US firm says a worm attack, possibly on the scale of MSBlaster and centering on a critical security flaw patched by Microsoft, this week, is imminent.
“It is a certainty that malware creators will be working over-time to make a worm out of this latest vulnerability in the Microsoft Windows Server Service. When that happens, it will definitely test the ability of organizations to effectively patch and protect systems,” says nCircle’s Minoo Hamilton.
“If effective propagation mechanisms are used, it could very well be on the scale of MSBlaster, and I would expect something any time – it could be coming in two weeks or it could be in two hours. This is as close to the worst-case scenario as we’ve seen in the last three years – a threat that is eminently wormable.”
The Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday warned Windows users to apply the latest Microsoft fix after the company said a hattacker could use it to, “take complete control of an affected system” – making it possible to install malicious programs or to change or delete data.
“Due to the nature of this particular vulnerability in Windows, the worm is likely to be widespread, fast-moving and could cause significant network downtime.,” says Hamilton.
“Peak infection could happen within hours.”
