Dell recalls 4.1M Sony batteries

p2pnet.net News:- Sony faces a potential loss of more than $225 million, after notebook PC batteries it supplied to Dell apparently exploded or caught fire, says vnunet.com.

In the largest pull-back in consumer electronics history, Dell has recalled 4.1 million Sony batteries installed in Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision Mobile Workstation notebooks sold between April 2004 and July 18 of this year.

It’s, warned customers to stop using the batteries immediately because they could overheat or even start fires, says the story. “The move follows a small number of recent reports of notebook batteries bursting violently into flames.

The recall, raises broader questions about lithium-ion batteries, which are used in devices like cell phones, portable power tools, camcorders, digital cameras and MP3 players, says The San Francisco Chronicle, going on:

The potential for such batteries to catch fire has been acknowledged for years and has prompted more limited recalls in the past. But a number of recent fires involving notebook computers, some aboard planes, have brought renewed scrutiny.

It’s not been a good week for Dell. It’s also being accused of false advertising in China.

Meanwhile, the company says the computers with potentially flammable batteries include:

Latitude: D410, D500, D505, D510, D520, D600, D610, D620, D800, D810
Inspiron: 500M, 510M, 600M, 700M, 710M, 6000, 6400, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9200, 9300, 9400, E1505, E1705
Precision: M20, M60, M70, M90
XPS: XPS, XPS Gen2, XPS M170, XPS M1710
