Something stinks at Torrentspy

p2pnet.net News:- TorrentSpy seems to have a suspicious amount of similar torrents for the PC game ‘Prey,’ says a Digg item.

Could it be, “software companies might be trying to lure downloaders in.. only to slap them in the face with a lawsuit later on?” – wonders adamsucks, who did the original post.

A search for the game pulls 131 results, “ All of which have similar amounts of seeders,” says the entry, going on:

“All of them posted anonymously. All of them having slightly varying titles. Anyone in the torrent scene should spot this. Be careful downloading.. it could be a trap.”

Go ahead. Flag it as inaccurate if you want, says adamsucks, after all, “it very well could be. But it’s worth saving people from getting in trouble.”

(Thanks, Mr X)

I see it as entrapment… want some candy… come and get it, i’ll sue you in a week or so though..

  2. Reader's Write Says:

What stinks at TorrentSpy are the ads and the stupid ShoutCast crap they plaster all over the front page.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

technically, that wouldn’t qualify as entrapment. Entrapment only applies if you wouldn’t have committed the crime had you not been convinced by the other party to commit it. Granted copyright infringement isn’t a “crime”, the same idea applies. If you’re on torrentspy downloading PC games, and you happen to get caught, then you have to reap what you sow

Of course, If I went to Torrentspy for something legit ( very Possible ), and never would have downloaded that game if it hadn’t
been offered so prominently, that might qualify.
Since the judges are industry paid puppets though, it would be
    a tougher sell.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

movie and music cartels have often fed fake files into p2p networks, with faked and bloated seed/download ratios, to try and deter people.

    it doesn’t work.

so why wouldn’t a game or software company do the same? as mentioned, the files of this game are of different sizes and varying titles. they’re probably all fakes submitted by the maker or an agent of the firm.

if someone can confirm what the files are, the questions will be answered.

  6. Reader's Write Says:

of course, people should stay away from unknown, unconfirmed files, but there are usually a few who know what they’re doing and what to look for, and who would be able to investigate this properly.

  7. Reader's Write Says:

it is a dud.. it doesn’t have a download speed of more than 0kb/s even though it has hundreds of peers
