Nine majors go for TLD

p2pnet.net News:- Nine major computer and communications companies says they’re applying for a mobile top-level domain (TLD) that would operate under a joint venture registry.

Microsoft, Nokia, Vodafone, Hewlett-Packard, Hutchinson 3G UK, Samsung Electronics, Sun Microsystems, Orange SA and the GSM Association say they want to simplifying mobile subscribers’ Internet experience and streamline the deployment of new sites aimed at mobile usage.

"The group plans to hand its TLD application to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on March 15 and expects a decision within three to six months," says an IDG News Service story here.

"If all goes well, the registry will be operating by the second-half of 2005, Brian Arbogast, Microsoft’s corporate of the MSN Communications Platform, said during a conference call Wednesday."

ICANN "could not comment on the likely outcome of the application Wednesday," says IDG, going on: "However, Arbogast said the group ‘remains very confident’ about the decision" and "We expect and encourage different members".

A mobile TLD would offer mobile customers more reliability when accessing content from their mobile devices, accelerating the adoption of mobile services, Arbogast said.

The group also plans to offer second-level and third-level mobile domains, adds the report.

    How about Mobile Wide Web?

    Instead of http://www.whatver.com do mww.whatever.com?????

You could use the existing infrastructure and companies just make sure their mww.whatever.com host points to the mobile content….

  2. Reader's Write Says:

Perfectly logical. Standardizes the URL’s for mobile content instead of having each company make up its own folder/subdomain combo for it.

You could argue that everybody should just use mobile.ourcompany.com , but may as well take it to this level and use ourcompany.mob or whatever it is they want.

    Nothing against this here.

  3. Reader's Write Says:

    How about
    mobile.dontneedthiscrap.blah

  4. Reader's Write Says:

The word ‘cartel’ comes to mind.

  5. Reader's Write Says:

Horrible, Horrible idea, just designate an official port number for mobile users.

80 is currently HTML, 21 is FTP, 25 is Telnet… how about 69 for mobile users or something.
