Canadian school promo mocks Bush
p2pnet.net News:- Lakehead University is in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and its claim to fame used to be principal Fred Gilbert’s fear that Wi-Fi might pose a health risk, “particularly to young people”.
Now Gilbert has now gone beyond that, way beyond, sanctioning an ad agency inspired promotional web site which uses one half of the US Cheney / Bush presidency to suggest George W. may not be, well, you know, all that smart. (Cough, cough.)
Says the promo blurb:
“There are universities and then there are universities. So let’s not beat around the bush.
Lakehead is different.
We believe the person you become after you graduate is even more important than the person you were when you enrolled.
Our professors and staff will prepare you to meet the challenges of your chosen profession.
Experience a dynamic university in a unique environment. Make the smart choice.
Go to a university that cares how well you do after you leave.
“Lakehead president and vice-chancellor Fred Gilbert said the ‘tongue-in-cheek’ campaign by Toronto advertising agency McLellan was designed to lure Toronto students to the Thunder Bay school,” says CTV.
But the president of Lakehead’s student union Isabelle Poniatowski said it lacked class.
“It strikes me as being very repugnant,” she’s quoted as saying. “Lakehead has so many positive attributes that you could really sell to people that live down south.”
Calling it an “edgy new guerrilla marketing campaign,” The Toronto Star says, “Officials with Yale did not return phone calls,” a White House spokesperson, “refused comment” and Barbara Hauser, acting president of the Council of Ontario Universities, said its 20 members are autonomous.
The campaign is also giving away a Smart Car lease and four portable PlayStation video games to grab the attention of youngsters in a market, “where the majority of people don’t even know we exist,” the story has Gilbert saying.
Meanwhile, who was it who commented, ‘There’s no such thing as bad publicity’?
Definitely stayed tuned ;P
