First PC-less Skype mobile
p2pnet.net News:- Philips says it’s launching the Philips VOIP841, the world’s first cordless DECT VoIP phone for Skype that works without a PC. It’ll function with both standard and Net calls, it says.
With Linux as the embedded software platform, the phone comes with a DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) base-station users plug into both a broadband connection and a traditional (aka “POTS”) phone line, says LinuxDevices.com.
According to Skype, it’ll take advantage of several Premium Skype services, “including SkypeOut, for inexpensive international calls to traditional landlines and mobile phones; SkypeIn, to receive calls from landline or mobile phones on Skype; and Skype Voicemail,” says the story.
Philips says the VOIP841, specifically designed for Skype users, will be ready for Christmas 2006 and that it’s also unveiling the VOIP080 handset featuring a wired USB PC connection.
“The Philips USB phone for Skype, the VOIP080, also benefits from a unique roll-up cable management system enabling the USB cable to be wrapped around the phone, ensuring no more knots in the phone cable,” says the company, adding:
“In addition to these new handsets, Philips also announced the launch of a range of universal hands-free multimedia headsets designed specifically for Internet based entertainment including VOIP calling, gaming, music and video.”
