MS DRM spells WOE for Sky

p2pnet.net News:- Microsoft DRM has forced UK satellite broadcaster BSkyB to suspend its broadband movie service.

“The move came last week when Microsoft discovered that hacking software called FreeUse4WM could affect its DRM capabilities, potentially making protected content available to pirates,” says C21Media, going on:

“The suspension of the Sky by Broadband movie service, launched earlier this year, also affects some of the sports video the company has been offering online. Sky is waiting on Microsoft to resolve the issue before resuming the service, which is separate to its new broadband access offer.”

Non-stop entertainment and software cartel hype has created the illusion that DRM - digital restrictions management - can work. In fact, anything which can be seen or heard can be copied, or as Bruce Schneier once said, “Digital files cannot be made uncopyable any more than water can be made not wet.”

Meanwhile, Bill and the Boyz hurriedly rushed out a patch they learned an application called FreeUse4WM could affect its DRM, “potentially making protected content available to pirates,” says C21Media.

“Days later, the creator of FreeUse4WM released a new version that cracked Microsoft’s patch,” says Silicon.com.

“However, while this version allowed individual files to be stripped of DRM, it did not enable users to download and strip subscription services’ entire catalogues.”

The Free Software Foundation’s DefectiveByDesign.org has named October 3 Anti-DRM Day, “to increase awareness to the threats of DRM”.

The protest site quotes a Disney executive as saying, “If consumers even know there’s a DRM, what it is, and how it works, we’ve already failed.”

Well if you don’t support DRM you are obviously hiding something. As well as being a criminal, pervert, and suporter of terrorists.
So if i’m underestanding the crap comming out of the DRM supporters (and the whitehouse for that matter) the latest ’spin’ is to be free you need to give up your freedoms.
