Warner Music does YouTube

p2pnet.net News:- With news that Big Four Organized Music cartel member Warner Music has signed a deal with YouTube comes further news that Microsoft is testing SoapBox, its own video-sharing service.

In the Warner deal, music videos will be for the first time “legally available”on YouTube, says Reuters, going on, “The companies said YouTube users would also be able to incorporate music from Warner’s catalog into the videos they create and upload.”

But lurking in the background, another cartel member, Vivendi Universal, claims YouTube, “consistently violates” the music industry’s copyrights and is darkly hinting at legal action.

Vivendi’s Universal, “has let it be known that pirates’ gold must be shared,” as The New York Post summed it up and, will it be MP3.com all over again? – wonders Bill Evans in a p2pnet comment post, saying:

“Negotiate. Labels say you’re not negotiating in good faith. They file a lawsuit. Uninformed Judge finds them guilty of infringement, awards them $25K per, resulting in billions of $$$ of debt. Universal offers to buy YouTube for about 10 cents on the dollar. They take it over and put it under in record time, meanwhile deleting all the files, copyrighted and original, thereby eliminating any potential competition.”

On the Microsoft video front, Microsoft hopes YouTube users will be “snatched away,” allowing Micosoft to use their presence on its own ’service’ to generate revenue through advertising, says The Seattle Times.

“Soapbox on MSN Video, released to a select group of test customers, is designed to allow anyone to upload and share original videos on the Web,” says the story. “Microsoft hopes Soapbox will both enhance and benefit from its other Web services to gain an edge in the explosive user-generated video market.”

According to the BBC, MSN Video, “was once the most popular video site until fans of user-generated content propelled YouTube, MySpace and Google past Microsoft”.

Big Four cartel member EMI has already struck its own deal with YouTube, as has NBC.
