HP’s Dunn out, ceo Hurd in
2pnet.net News:- Having already been let down gently following news that the company had hired private investigators to hack reporters’ phone records, Hewlett-Packard boss Patricia Dunn has now hit rock bottom.
Now, HP ceo Mark Hurd must try to clean up the mess that remains and, ”I extend my sincerest apologies to those journalists who were investigated and to everyone who was impacted,” the Associated Press has him saying, going on:
"Determined to protect confidential board discussions, HP hired investigators who impersonated board members, employees and journalists to obtain their phone records. The detectives also surveilled an HP director and concocted an e-mail sting to dupe a reporter with an online technology site."
Hurd also admitted he’d had a copy of the subsequent report, "but I did not read it,” he stated, says The San Jose Mercury News: "I could have, and I should have.”
And, "That’s a significant confession, especially given that California’s attorney general is threatening to file criminal charges," says the story.
Meanwhile, in an example of supreme irony, "HP – which faces US federal and state investigations for spying on board members and journalists – is co-sponsoring an award for ‘privacy innovation’," The Register points out.
"The annual awards, now in their fourth year, are jointly sponsored by HP and the Maine-based International Association of Privacy Professionals, and aim to honour ’strong and unique contributions to the privacy industry’."
