IFPI nails Russian CD plant

p2pnet.net News:- The IFPI says it’s filing of compensation claims worth almost $1.5 million against Russia’s Roff Technologies optical disc plant in Russia.

That’s interesting given that on its site, Roff claims it, "cooperates with the Russian Author Society (RAO), the Russian Anti-Pirate Organization (RAPO), the International Phonogram Producers Federation (IFPI)" and that "All discs released by the company are SID-coded."

Notwithstanding, the IFPI says the plant is, "behind the unauthorised manufacture of CDs containing international repertoire by artists including Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and U2."

The Big Music enforcement organ says this is the second major set of claims filed it’s against a Russian CD plant recently.

"The Russian authorities have a responsibility to take firmer enforcement action to deal with this threat not only to Russia’s talented but blighted music market, but also to halt its international distribution of pirate discs to other parts of the worlds," says IFPI boss Jay Berman, who once ran the RIAA.

"The plaintiff companies are claiming a combined indemnity of 40 million roubles, or US$1,400,000," says the IFPI. "They are also asking that Roff Technologies halts further production of the titles alleged to have been illegally manufactured, and for the confiscation of machinery and equipment used to produce them."

A preliminary hearing for one of the claims was held on March 3 and another has been set for March 15. The remaining six claims are currently with the Moscow City Appeal Court on a procedural issue, and preliminary hearings are expected to be set in due course, adds the organization.
